The country music drama Nashville has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season by CMT, the network announced today. The series, airing for four seasons on ABC before moving to the cable network this year, has been a hit for the network, averaging near 1 million viewers per week.
While the first five years hovered around the traditional model of 22-episodes per year, being on a cable network makes sense for the shorter 16-episode renewal (which is still higher than most cable series episode orders).
Nashville lost one of the show’s leads with Connie Britton being killed off earlier this year. The second half of season five returns on June 1st.
