In case you haven’t heard, there was recently a massive leak of alleged plot details regarding the seventh season of Game Of Thrones. For those who are interested in reading through those details, a thread at Reddit has the whole batch. Obviously, you’re in for some spoilers if you choose to give it a look. We won’t be revealing the specifics here, but wanted to mark down a few thoughts based on some of the broader implications.
Again, this post includes spoilers.
The Stark Children Are The Stars
Game Of Thrones has become known for killing off characters and doing away with entire storylines that once seemed integral to the central plot. It’s somewhat surprising then, that season seven appears poised to prominently feature the remaining Stark children. The series began with these characters as mere kids at Winterfell, and has since scattered them around the world. We knew from a one report prior to the major leak that Jon Snow would probably factor into the next season in a big way, likely by connecting with Daenerys Targaryen. But one thing you can’t help but notice if you read through the leaks is that the remaining Stark children are all over them—though we won’t mention what these characters are supposed to be doing.
A Baratheon May Be In Play
Just as the series began with the Stark children, it also began with four prominent houses that stood above the rest: Stark, Lannister, Targaryen, and Baratheon. These four houses contained the bulk of the main characters early on and looked to be the main contenders for the Iron Throne. As a result, they became the most recognizable houses among fans, and even exclusively dominated one of the first Game Of Thrones video games. This site contains a description of the game (along with several others based on TV and film), which is more or less a slot machine stocked with imagery and bonuses relating to the four great houses. Even with all this recognition, the Baratheon house eventually fell by the wayside—until now. We won’t get into the specifics, but based on the leaks it appears that Gendry, the long lost bastard son of Robert Baratheon, still has a part to play, which means we could be back to the four “main” houses of Westeros.< br />
There Will Be More Flashbacks
This is a smaller and more general point, but it’s one that should fuel further speculation about which flashbacks are relevant. Season six had some incredibly powerful and interesting moments shown through Bran Stark’s ability to reach into the past with his mind, and if the leaks are any indication we’ll be seeing more of the same in season seven.
Wayward Characters Will Be Back
Game Of Thrones has a way of leaving characters on the side just long enough to get us wondering if they might come back. For instance, this list from before season six is full of people who wound up returning to action during the season. This time around, a similar list might include the likes of Jorah Mormont, Euron Greyjoy, the aforementioned Gendry, and a few others. They haven’t all been missing long, but they seem decidedly on the outside of the action at this point. Without getting into details, many such characters happen to be mentioned throughout the leaks.
Those are just a few takeaways from a batch of leaks that’s causing some controversy online. On the one hand they paint a picture of an incredibly thrilling story moving forward. On the other, if they prove to be accurate, this is an unprecedented breach of secrecy for HBO, and a huge spoiler for a lot of enthusiastic fans.
