Guy Ritchie, the man responsible for films like Sherlock Holmes, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and The Man From UNCLE is in final negotiations to direct a live-action version of Aladdin, which was a huge animated hit for Disney in 1992. Big Fish writer John August has penned the script.
Aladdin was one of Disney’s biggest hits in the 90s, winning two Oscars and was toplined by a memorable performance by the late Robin Williams as Genie.
The live-action version of classic animated films has been a hot market for Disney, with success coming from Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. Favreau, who directed The Jungle Book has signed on to helm a live-action The Lion King to debut in a few years. Beauty and the Beast is set to debut on March 17, 2017 with a live-action Mulan being fast tracked for 2018.
