Original Criminal Minds cast member Thomas Gibson has been fired after an altercation with a writer earlier this week. It was reported that Gibson had kicked a writer on set and was suspended for two episodes. However, after an investigation, CBS and ABC Studios terminated his contract.
In a statement, the studios said, “Thomas Gibson has been dismissed from Criminal Minds. Creative details for how the character’s exit will be addressed in the show will be announced at a later date.”
In his own statement to TVLine (who also first reported the story), Gibson said, “I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last 12 years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew, and, most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have.”
Gibson was already going to be written out of a few episodes so former star Paget Brewster could return for a few episodes as Emily Prentiss, with Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer saying, “Prentiss is doing essentially temporary duty with us, while Hotch is on temporary duty doing something that the Director tapped him to do…and then we’ll get to see what that assignment was about. It’s a big thing that will play out.”
This isn’t the first time one of the main stars of the series left, with Mandy Patinkin leaving two episodes into the third season, and Shemar Moore leaving 3/4 of the way last year.
