Deadline reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has been cast in the lead role for the upcoming sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim.
The sequel will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Daredevil, Smallville) and will begin production later this year. DeKnight takes over the director’s chair from Guillermo Del Toro. Del Toro will serve as an executive producer on the film.
Boyega, who rose to world wide fame from his role as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will play the son of Idris Elba’s character, Stacker Pentecost. Boyega confirmed the casting on Instagram.
I'll be taking on the Pacific Rim franchise! I'm excited to be working with Legendary pictures and Steven S.Deknight. My company UpperRoom Productions founded by myself & @MrFemiOguns, will co-produce #PacificRim2 alongside @Legendary For me, this collaboration couldn't be a better way to get UpperRoom started. It brings an invigorating feeling to know that I get to participate in the telling of a remarkable story from more than one angle. Big love to all X
