Amber Heard cast as Mera in “Justice League Part I”

Amber Heard confirmed her casting as Mera, Aquaman’s wife & Queen of Atlantis.

After months of speculation, Amber Heard let it be known that she has been cast as Mera in the upcoming DC Comics/Warner Bros film Justice League Part One.

In the comics, Mera is the wife of Aquaman and the Queen of Atlantis. Her powers and abilities include expert swimming, advanced hand-to-hand combat skills, superhuman strength, the ability to breathe under water, hydrokinesis (ability to control/manipulate water), super-leaping, super speed, and telepathy.

Heard was reportedly rumored to be in negotiations to play the Atlantean Queen back in January 2016. Last Friday, Heard was interviewed about her upcoming film The Adderall Diaries by Entertainment Tonight and confirmed that she had been cast as Mera and that she’ll make her first appearance in Justice League Part One.

When asked about the costume, Heard said, “It’s interesting. It’s like, half suit of armor, half scales. It’s strange… We’re in the process of building it now, so it’s coming along.”

Justice League Part One doesn’t start production until April, so it makes sense that the costume design is not completed. The “half scales” remark could mean the armor will have a scale like texture, or could be scales etched into the armor, similar to the scale design in Jason Momoa’s Aquaman costume.

Heard’s casting will be only the second ever live-action portrayal of the Queen of Atlantis. Mera made her live action debut in Smallville’s tenth season, played by Elena Satine.

Heard will also reprise her role as Mera in the solo-Aquaman movie, currently set for release on July 27, 2018 and directed by  James Wan (Furious 7).

Her casting in Justice League Part One is the first new casting revealed by Warner Bros and DC. She’ll join established cast members Momoa, Henry Cavill (Superman/Clark Kent), Ben Affleck (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman/Diana Prince), Ray Fisher (Cyborg/Victor Stone), and Ezra Miller (The Flash/Barry Allen).  The film will be directed by Man of Steel Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder and is slated to release November 17, 2017
