Disney confirms new “Indiana Jones” film

Disney’s planning a new Indiana Jones film, but will Harrison Ford dawn the fedora once more?

Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that Disney is moving forward with a new Indiana Jones movie.

Iger let the news slip during an interview with Bloomberg NewsWith the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Iger addressed the future of the franchise saying, “With George Lucas’s Star Wars – and Indiana Jones, by the way, which will be coming, we have more great stories.”

The rights of the Indiana Jones franchise, which was created by George Lucas, were purchased by Disney back in 2012 when Disney purchased LucasFilm for $4 billion. While the primary purchase was the Star Wars franchise, Disney also acquired the rights to the Indiana Jones rights. Despite Paramount Pictures owning the rights, Disney’s primary ownership of LucasFilm allowed it to acquire it. After Disney finished the deal with Lucas, they immediately went into production on the Star Wars sequel trilogy but kept Indiana Jones in the back with no immediate plans on the franchise’s future.

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominating the all-time box office records, it seemed like a no-brainer to go into production on a new Indiana Jones film. The last Indiana Jones film released was the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull back in 2008.

Iger didn’t go into further detail regarding if the new movie would be a prequel, sequel, or a reboot.

If Disney plans on a prequel, it wouldn’t be a stretch; George Lucas created The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles back in the 1990’s. The series, which ran from 1992-1993 and spawned several television movies between 1994-1996, focused on a 93-year-old Indy (George Hall) telling stories of his adventures as a young boy (10 years old, played by Corey Carrier) or as a teenager (aged 16-21, played by Sean Patrick Flanery).

Director Steven Spielberg, who was behind the camera for all four films, expressed his desire to work on a new Indiana Jones film. During an interview with Yahoo discussing the Jurassic Park franchise, Spielberg expressed his desire to do a new movie with Harrison Ford reprising the role. If Ford declined, Spielberg stated he would like to have Bradley Cooper or Chris Pratt to play a younger version of Indy.

However, Spielberg recently has changed his opinion. In an interview with ScreenRant, Spielberg said that he could never replace Harrison Ford as Indy. “It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman,” he said. “There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.”

Are you excited about a new Indiana Jones film? Would you like to see Harrison Ford reprise his role or would you rather they reboot the franchise? Sound off in the comment section.
