Veteran actor and Senator Fred Thompson passed away today at the age of 73. Thompson was a Senator in Tennessee from 1994-2003. He is best known for his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch from Law & Order from 2002-2007.
Thompson was a character actor through the 80’s and early 90’s before he was elected to finish Al Gore’s final two years of Senate in Tennessee. He also put his hat in the 2008 Presidential election, before dropping out after little reaction during his campaign.
Thompson played Arthur Branch for 116 episodes of the original Law & Order, 11 in Special Victims Unit, all 13 of Trial by Jury, and 1 of Criminal Intent, making him one of the few actors to appear in all four New York based Law & Order series.
In 2004, Thompson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), a form of cancer. He passed away today due to a recurrence of the lymphoma.
