NBC Orders ‘Chicago Med’ Spin-Off and Two More Dramas for 2015-16 Season

A few days after the second Chicago Fire/Chicago PD/Law & Order: SVU crossover event, NBC has announced that it has picked up Chicago Med to series. The backdoor pilot for Chicago Med aired a few weeks ago on the Chicago Fire episode “I Am the Apocalypse.” The cast will include Oliver Platt, S. Epatha Merkerson, Laurie Holden, Nick Gehlfuss, and Yaya DaCosta.

The peacock network also announced two other pilots to series, Heartbreaker and Blindspot. Blindspot is a drama about a woman who has amnesia that is covered in tattoos, which each one revealing a clue to an unsolved crime. Heartbreaker is another medical drama that follows a transplant surgeon.

The two medical pickups might not bode well for The Night Shift, which was a strong performer last summer, but moved to a midseason spot this year. The show is doing decent in the ratings, but three medical shows on one network might be too many.
