After teasing fans with partial images of Oscar-winner Jared Leto as The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad film, director David Ayer gave fans a treat on Friday night.
Ayer tweeted the image of Leto, in full on Joker makeup, with the message, “The Suicide Squad wishes you a Happy Anniversary Mr. J! #Joker75 #SuicideSquad @WarnerBrosEnt @DCComics.”
This version of the Joker looks drastically different than the version played by Jack Nicholson in 1989’s Batman, foregoing a permanent wide grin and generic clown makeup for a tattooed, crazy individual with decaying teeth, face paint, and green hair. Two major things stand out from Leto-Joker’s tattoos: 1) the iconic “Ha Ha Ha” font found in Batman comics whenever Joker laughs 2) the giant smile on Leto’s right arm, which looks like the giant grin the comic book version of The Joker always sports.
The image itself is a nod to an iconic panel from the one-shot graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland.

Suicide Squad releases August 5, 2016 and also stars Will Smith as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as George Harkness/Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as June Moone/Enchantress, Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje as Waylon Jones/Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara, and Adam Beach as Christopher Weiss/Slipknot.
