“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” spin-off reportedly in works

Agents of SHIELD Season 2

A spin-off to “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is reportedly in the works at ABC.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that they’ve received exclusive news that ABC and Marvel Entertainment are planning a spin-off series to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The report states that the spin-off will be created by S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0). Neither Marvel nor ABC have confirmed anything regarding a potential spin-off series, but EW claims both are quietly developing the spin-off to potentially air in the fall in a “best case scenario.” If the spin-off does get green lit, it could potentially follow the airing format that Marvel’s Agent Carter did this past winter by airing during the middle of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s mid-season break.

The spin-off reportedly will not be a backdoor pilot (best example being how The Flash had a backdoor pilot from Arrow) but that story elements yet-to-air on the show will be the groundwork for a new show. Best guess scenarios are that a main character from S.H.I.E.L.D. could his or her own spin-off (perhaps Skye or Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird?). Or perhaps it’ll be something related to the Inhumans considering Season 2 of S.H.I.E.L.D. has laid the groundwork leading up to the movie in 2019.

Don’t get too excited yet. Again, Marvel and ABC have not confirmed anything, but the report from EW is gaining traction that other entertainment websites are reporting on the story as if it will happen.

The report also says that a third season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is “pretty much guaranteed” and that Agent Carter has a 60% chance of returning for a second season.

What’s your opinion on the spin-off? If it does get green-lit, what do you think the spin-off will be?
