Melissa Benoist, star of CBS’s upcoming hour-long Supergirl series, set the comic world abuzz with two promotional pictures of her dressed in the Supergirl costume. The former Glee actress tweeted the images on her Twitter and wrote, “THIS. I still can’t believe I am wearing the House of El coat of arms. #supergirl #wbdctv”
The costume was designed by Oscar winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, who has also contributed to the designs of the Arrow and Flash costumes. In describing the costume, Atwood said, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”
Initial Reaction: I really like this. When I first saw this, the first thing I thought was that it looked similar to the costume Henry Cavill wore in 2013’s Man of Steel because of the muted colors and costume material, but it keeps the iconic design fans have known from the comic books. The muted colors are a big element in the Arrow and Flash costumes, so this looks like her outfit fits the tone of Arrow & Flash, further suggesting the three shows could share the same universe. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had a feeling the muted colors would be involved. I give it a big thumbs up.
What’s your take on the costume?
