Gina Carano has been cast as Angel Dust in Marvel’s “Deadpool”

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that former MMA fighter Gina Carano and comedian T.J. Miller have been cast in Marvel’s Deadpool movie that stars Ryan Ryenolds in the title role.

The report indicates that Carano (Haywire, Fast & Furious 6) has closed the casting deal to play Angel Dust/Christine. Her role in the Deadpool film has not been revealed, but in the comics, Angel Dust is a member of a small group of outcast mutants living under the streets of Chicago known as the Morlocks. The Morlocks made a pact to stay together to help each other fulfill one last “wish” left over from their lives on the surface. Angel Dust’s powers give her the superhuman to chemically supercharge her adrenaline levels, temporarily granting her superhuman strength. Since Carano is a former MMA fighter and has been cast primarily in action films, she was a logical choice for the role.

Miller, best known for his starring role as Erlich Bachman on HBO’s Silicone Valley, has been cast for “comic relief” in an unknown role. This casting seems unusual as Deadpool is typically comic relief on his own.

The report also gave some details regarding the film itself. Reynolds’ Wade Wilson/Deadpool will have a different origin than the version he played in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This time around, the deadly assassin is dying of cancer and undergoes a procedure that is supposed to cure him. Instead, it ends up leaving him twisted and scarred while also giving with super-powers, such as an  accelerated healing factor.

There’s also news that the character Colossus is expected to appear in the film. Colossus has been featured in the main X-Men films played by Daniel Cudmore. Although there has been no official casting, it’s likely that Cudmore will reprise his role in Deadpool. This will also confirm that the Deadpool movie will share the same cinematic universe as the X-Men films.

What’s your take on the casting news? Are you looking forward to when Deadpool is released?
