This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly will give fans a first look at the latest entry in the Terminator film franchise. Featuring two collectible covers, the magazine is filled with photographs and details about the upcoming film, which is intended to be the first in a new trilogy.

Directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) Terminator: Genisys features the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator/T-800. Newcomers to the franchise are Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as John Connor, Jai Courtney (Divergent) as Kyle Reese. J.K. Simmons also stars, along with former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith.

According to EW, Genisys is set in 2029 where the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels have the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. Like in the original film, John Connor sends Kyle Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah, from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

Since the film is a sequel/reboot, there are going to be changes. Emilia Clarke’s character isn’t the innocent Sarah Connor that was introduced in the 1984 film, nor is she the muscular warrior seen in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. In this version, she is orphaned by a Terminator at age 9. Since then, she’s been raised by Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, calling the T-800 “Pops.” This Terminator is programmed to guard as opposed to kill, resulting in Sarah’s evolution as a trained, anti-social recluse who is a master at a sniper rifle but lacks the nuance of human emotion. Producer David Ellison explains, “Since she was 9 years old, she has been told everything that was supposed to happen, but Sarah fundamentally rejects that destiny. She says, ‘That’s not what I want to do.’ It’s her decision that drives the story in a very different direction.”
