On Friday morning, TLC pulled the plug on its reality series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo after information surfaced that June “Mama June” Shannon, aka Honey Boo Boo’s mother, is dating an ex-boyfriend convicted of sexually abusing one of her relatives.
TMZ.com first broke the story on Thursday about the relationship. June denied any relationship with Mark McDaniel, a registered sex offender, despite TMZ obtaining photographic evidence of the two cuddling up at a party in a hotel room. TLC, the network that airs the insanely popular reality series, didn’t believe her and cancelled the show, citing that she was endangering her children.
The network filmed an entire season of episodes set to air but will no longer air them in the wake of the scandal. Despite falling ratings, the show was still financially successful and TLC will take a financial hit.
In an exclusive statement to TMZ, a representative of TLC said “Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority. TLC is faithfully committed to the children’s ongoing comfort and well-being.”
“Mamma June” continues to deny the reports, going as far as to address the situation on her Facebook page.
The show focused on June and her daughter, Alana Thompson (aka Honey Boo Boo), a former child beauty contestant who caught the public eye from her appearance on TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras
Honey Boo Boo has had it’s share of criticism over the years with many critics calling the show offensive and that the network was exploiting the children for ratings and financial profit.
