Just when you think Hollywood is starting to run out of ideas, this latest movie announcement reeks of desperation.

” There’s much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines.” – Henk Rogers, Tetris Company managing director.
On Monday, news came out that the popular 80’s game Tetris is being adapted into a sci-fi movie. Threshold Entertainment, is teaming up with The Tetris Company to develop a live action science fiction film. There is no cast or director attached to the project, but it is reported by The Wall Street Journal that a story is in place.
This wouldn’t be the first live action adaption of a video game by Threshold Entertainment; the production company is best known for it’s film adaptions of the Mortal Kombat games. The first movie, Mortal Kombat (1995) grossed $122 million world wide on an $18 million budget. A sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was released two years later and under performed at the global box office, grossing only $51 million on a $30 million budget. Recently, the company has recently been associated straight-to-video CGI DVD films such as Bionicle: The Legend Reborn (2009) and LEGO: The Adventures of Clutch Powers (2010)
According to Threshold’s CEO Larry Kasanoff, Tetris is “a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”
Tetris Company managing director Henk Rogers expressed his thoughts on the film adaption.
“What started as a simple, computer puzzle game 30 years ago, today is part of our global consciousness, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds and feeding our innate desire to create order out of chaos. We look forward to partnering with Threshold Entertainment to re-imagine that common experience and bring a spectacular new Tetris universe to the big screen for the first time. In this new universe, as you’ll soon find out, there’s much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines.”
Would you go see a Tetris movie? Do you think it could be a success or are we looking at another bomb like Battleship? Let us know what you think.
