Ever since ComicCon, former pro-wrestler turned actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has teased fans about his involvement in a DC Comics movie. Speculation around the Internet was that Johnson would play Shazam or his nemesis, Black Adam.
Today, Johnson finally revealed his casting in the Shazam! movie on Twitter:
A spokeswoman for Warner Bros confirmed to TheWrap that Johnson was cast as Black Adam and that screenwriter Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Slayer, Lost, Shrek Forever After) is attached to the project.
Black Adam is the adversary of Shazam, the alter ego of a young boy named Billy Batson who magically transforms himself into a costumed man with god-like powers by saying the magic word “Shazam.” Originally, Shazam named Captain Marvel but DC changed recently in the New 52 reboot due to a naming conflict of a Marvel character with the same name.
For those who are unaware, the Black Adam is an ancient Egyptian prince who was given incredible powers by the wizard Shazam (the same wizard who gave Billy his powers), but Black Adam became corrupted by his powers overthrew the ruling pharaoh. Unable to strip him of his powers, Shazam banished Black Adam to the farthest star in the universe. He managed to survived into the modern era and constantly goes up against Billy/Shazam. Recently, the Black Adam has been depicted as a corrupted antihero, constantly attempting to clear his name. In 2009, he was ranked as the 16th Greatest Comic Book Villain of all time by IGN.
Indications suggest Johnson’s portrayal of Black Adam will be the corrupted antihero as suggested by his tweeting “#TheAntiHero
