Brandon Routh is returning to the live action DC Universe–not as Superman, but as The Atom.
News broke on Monday that Routh, best known as Clark Kent/Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns, has joined the hit CW series Arrow in a re-occurring role as Ray Palmer/The Atom for the show’s third season. For those not familiar with DC Characters outside of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, Ray Palmer/The Atom is a scientist who has the ability to alter the size of his body (similar to Marvel’s Ant-Man).
TVLine.com described Ray Palmer as “an unparalleled scientist and inventor” who will play “an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and (rumored love interest) Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.”
The 34-year-old Routh won’t be the first actor to play The Atom; that accomplishment belongs to John Kassir in the ill-fated Justice League of America pilot for CBS in 1997.
The casting of Palmer is the second DC Comics character to be cast for Season 3 of Arrow, joining actress Devon Aoki’s casting as Katana, a Japanese sword-wielding hero.
Are you excited for the upcoming season of Arrow and it’s spin-off series, The Flash? Feel free to post your thoughts.
