News Brief: NBC cancels “Whitney” and “1600 Penn”, renews “Parks & Recreation”

UPDATE: Frosh comedy Guys With Kids and sophomore Up All Night also are canned. Up All Night was presumed dead when star Christina Applegate quit.

As NBC picks up comedies including the About a Boy remake, Crisis, and others, the network has canceled sophomore comedy Whitney and frosh comedy 1600 Penn. Neither series did well in the ratings, and NBC is starting to clear house to try and regain its once former glory.

On a positive note, the only comedy that so far has been renewed (and might be the only one) is Parks & Recreation, getting a sixth season. The veteran comedy has been decent in the ratings, but continues to be a critical darling.
