First, Disney Channel announced that they are planning a sequel to Boy Meets World, a staple of ABC’s TGIF lineup throughout the 90s. Then, original series stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel signed on to reprise their roles of Cory and Topanga Matthews. Now, we are left with months of speculation on who will come back, what the show will be like, and many other unanswered questions.
Here’s what we can confirm: Rider Strong, who played Shawn Hunter, is not signed on for the new series. He says in a statement on his website, “At this point, I have no official involvement in Girl Meets World. There might be a chance to see some of the BMW cast in a guest spot, and I think it would be nice to find out where our characters have been all these years. But Girl Meets World will be, and I think it should be, it’s own show. It will be about Cory and Topanga, their daughter, and a new set of characters.
Most of the original cast have weighed in on their opinions as Girl Meets World was officially given the green light on production. William Russ, who portrayed Cory’s dad Alan Matthews told the Huffington Post, “I’m very excited for Disney and [creator] Michael Jacobs. They are a great team and will produce an exceptional show, I have no doubt.”
Lily Nicksay, who portrayed little Morgan Matthews for the first few seasons of BMW (she was later replaced by Lindsay Ridgeway) told TMZ, “I’d love to talk [to Disney] about being a part of it.” While Disney hasn’t approached Nicksay yet, she still remains excited for the series.
One of the biggest surprises has been Anthony Tyler Quinn, who played Mr. Jonathon Turner for three years on the show before he “mysteriously” vanished, opening up to the Huff about the possibility of reprising his role. He states, “Boy Meets World was and continues to be these beautiful brushstrokes in my life. It was a wonderful experience, and I think Michael’s going to create something fresh. I’d love to be a part of it.”
It remains to be seen on who will be a part of the new series, but it seems as though Strong summed it up best, saying, “But Girl Meets World will be, and I think it should be, it’s own show. It will be about Cory and Topanga, their daughter, and a new set of characters. It’s the next generation. And I, for one, can’t wait to see it evolve.”
