Reports have unofficially confirmed that Robin Williams has been tapped to play Dr. Hugo Strange in the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Williams has always been a great comedic actor, but while his roles in drama were astounding, they were greatly undervalued. Williams is the most successful comedic actor to do dramatic work as well, as stars like Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey don’t switch genres as easy.
The Dark Knight Rises will also feature Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) and Tom Hardy as Bane. While it would be great to see Williams in this film, check it out here first to see when the reports are confirmed.

#1: this better not be true. I know Williams gave his best performance to date in Nolan’s Insomnia, but I cannot see him in the world Nolan has created for Batman.
#2: Jim Carrey and Sandler switch genres just fine. I’d rather have them doing dramas. Sandler’s best film is easily Punch-Drunk Love and Carrey’s best work is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I should’ve clarified better on the #2. In terms of box office numbers (which is what studios care about), Williams has been more successful than Carrey and Sandler. I have enjoyed both Carrey’s and Sandler’s dramatic films more than their comedic work in awhile…although I do still believe Williams was vastly underrated in One Hour Photo
