Quick Reviews: Race to Witch Mountain, New York I Love You, Percy Jackson, When In Rome

race_to_witch_mountain_dvdRace to Witch Mountain: While the talented cast does it’s best to make the film as fun as possible, it still suffers from too many over-the-top humor, pointless action, and unanswered questions. Dwayne Johnson is fun to watch, but definitely needs to go back to action flicks. C

New York I Love You: The very talented cast (including Ethannew-york-i-love-you-poster  Hawke, John Hurt, Julie Christie, Orlando Bloom, Bradley Cooper, James Caan, Anton Yelchin, and Natalie Portman) tries their best to do what they can with their very short screen time, but the film never lets the audience become emotionally engaged with any of the characters. The only highlight of the film is a very short story involving Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman, it is both heartfelt and funny, but only takes about five minutes of the film. D

Percy-Jackson-Movie-Poster Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief: The film has a lot of fun with Greek mythology, and it benefits from a talented supporting cast. The downfall of the film is it’s lack of focus and lack of character development. Too many times does it fall into clichés. While it is fun to go along with the fantasy storyline, it is too predictable to become too involved in. C

When-In-Rome-Movie-Poster When in Rome: With such a talented and comical cast, you would expect a lot more than this dud. The only highlights come from SNL’s Bobby Moynihan and Wedding Crashers’ Keir O’Donnell, who bring the real comedy to the film. While Josh Duhamel and Dax Shepard certainly have their moments, other actors like Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, and Anjelica Huston are wasted here. The romantic relationship isn’t given enough time to really flourish and it is predictable every step of the way. If you choose to watch this, keep a lookout for the Blackout dinner scene, which easily brings the most laughs in the film. D+
