“Family Guy” Volume Eight

Family Guy has been releasing their series in volumes since the beginning of their DVD releases. Volume Eight contains the final seven episodes of the seventh season and the first eight of the eighth, for a total of fifteen episodes. These episodes are also uncensored, so expect a few f-bombs and other colorful language not present in the televised versions (although you can choose to watch the televised versions instead).

The episodes range from hilarious to mediocre, as it is with the series. The show is starting to show a few signs of aging with the departure of Cleveland to his own show. While many episodes still have the wit and humor as previous seasons, the lack of Cleveland and the too often used disturbing jokes have hurt this set of episodes.

Bonus features aren’t as extensive as they were in previous releases. There are commentaries on most episodes, and some are quite interesting. There are also deleted scenes for most episodes as well. You can be the judge if they should’ve been in episodes or not. There is also a feature on the episode “Road to the Multiverse” which is quite interesting for the most part, but is dry towards the end. Finally, there is karaoke that has some of the best songs from the series, and you get to sing along with the clips. I wish some other songs were featured, but there is an extensive list.

The audio and visual aspects of the set are superb for an animated show. I watched the episodes on my laptop, a standard DVD player, and a Blu-ray player. The colors are bright and vivid and the sounds are crisp and clear. The transfer to the DVD is probably the best you will get for an animated show.

Overall, if you are a fan of the show and don’t watch it regularly or on re-runs, this is a good purchase. However, if you watch the show every night on Adult Swim, TBS, or Fox, you aren’t gaining too much. The price will drop near Black Friday, so I’d also wait for that time if at all possible.
