Last night was the first night for Rickey Minor and the Tonight Show Band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It comes as a big change as the former bandleader, Kevin Eubanks was Jay Leno’s partner for the past 18 years. Obviously things will take time to settle down, but you get a feel for things after the first episode.
The first major change is the theme song. The theme is a lot more upbeat, similar to
the Tonight Show’s former theme song before The Jay Leno Show, but also is very contemporary. Another big change is that the band is entirely new. While the band gels nicely, its taking a bit to adjust to them all.
Now the main thing: the interaction between Jay and Rickey. While Kevin was always the sidekick for Jay, it seemed (at least last night) that Jay was doing the show solo. He tried to throw to Rickey a couple times, but it didn’t seem like Rickey was comfortable talking. While this might be first week jitters, hopefully Jay has someone he can throw jokes off of, and if not, bring back John Melendez.
After giving Rickey a few months to grow on the show, I really feel him and his band aren’t fit for the show. Watching them, they all seem very arrogant and cocky, and just seem to be doing the motions, thinking they are a great band. They really put me off in a way that I don’t even want to watch The Tonight Show.
Let us know what you think!
