Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of the novel “Shutter Island” is the best film I have seen so far this year. Leonardo DiCaprio gives one of his best performances (next to The Aviator, also by Scorsese) and should see some recognition during the 2010 Academy Awards. The film is a tense, visual, and haunting mystery allowing Scorsese to take the style back to some of the classic thrillers in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock. The deets of the release were announced today for the DVD and Blu-ray editions. The DVD will contain absolutely no special features, where the Blu-ray will include a “Behind the Shutters” featurette that will follow the film from it’s inception all the way to the big screen. The Blu-ray will also include a featurette focusing on the historical landscape of psychiatric therapies during the 1950s by way of interviews with the cast and crew.
