Before “Sherlock Holmes” was even released at the end of 2009, there had been rumors of Brad Pitt would turn up to play Sherlock’s nemesis, Professor Moriarty, who is mentioned in the film with the intention of the sequel focusing on him. Director Guy Ritchie and Brad Pitt have been trying to work together since their first collaboration on “Snatch”, and this seems like a perfect time and a perfect project to do just that.
Writers Michele and Kieran Mulroney are currently working on the script for the sequel and awaiting to find out whether or not Pitt will be interested in the part.
"I think he’s a brilliant actor and a particularly brilliant character actor," said Michele. "And certainly the role that you’re talking about of Professor Moriarty is a big character to bite off. I hope Brad likes it. Let’s leave it at that. To be political, we should say nothing. But, he’s wonderful. We couldn’t be bigger fans of Brad. So, we’ll see what happens."
I am sure that Warner Bros. would definitely be interested in having Pitt in the role, seeing as how that could most certainly boost ticket sales from already making a noticeable mark with the first release. All we can do is wait and see.
